Choosing the Best Car For Your Family

May 30th, 2009

When you chose your first car, chances are you looked first at things like how cool the car was and how much you wanted to drive it. Then reality hit when you saw the price, and finally you chose what you could actually afford and tried to find the best model in that price range.

Selecting the right car for the family is not so different from how you picked your first car. Sure, you’ve probably had several cars. And yes, perhaps you now have a slightly higher budget. But the fact is, you need to buy the best car for your family, with the money you have available.

The first thing to consider when choosing a car is its main use. If it’s going to will be the “second car” and the whole family will not normally ride in it, the car may not need to be as large or be equipped with many family oriented features.

Second, who will drive the car the most? The primary driver should find the car comfortable, and that includes how the seats feel, where the controls are located, how they are built, how the car drives and whether the mirrors and controls are adjustable to the main driver’s needs.

The next thing to think about is not the next thing most people think of, but it is very important. You should check that the trunk has a big opening and that it’s sizeable enough for your needs. Some cars that have big trunks will not take large objects in the trunk because the opening isn’t wide or tall enough.

You also need to figure out how many doors you need. If more than two people usually ride in the car, four doors are almost necessary, especially as kids grow. It can become a very big pain to get people in and out of the back of a two-door car.

Seating room goes along with the number of doors, but be sure to check that the there’s enough room in the back for adults as well as kids. while your kids might be small now you want to make sure that as they grow, there is room for everyone in the car without scrunching.

Mileage is also a consideration, as a number of smaller cars that give good mileage may in fact beĀ  too small for your family. However, as many companies are beginning to focus more on mileage, you may find a nice van or sedan that will suit your family and get better mileage than your old car gives.

In the end, choosing a car is a very personal decision that you and your family should take together. The foremost thing is that you should feel that you have bought a car you can afford, that both you and your family can feel comfortable in and that will provide you with years of service.

After all, financing a car is a very long-term commitment, and you need to be happy with your purchase for the life of the car. Just taking the time to examine your options and think about what you really need lets you enjoy your car long after that new-car smell fades away.
