Black Tyres, Why are They Black?

April 27th, 2009

As new cars develop we start to see complex technologies come to light, as well as that we are starting to see a whole to shape to cars. But 1 thing that has not changed since the creation of the first ever vehicle is the colour of tyres. Whatever country you go to in the world you will see a car that has black tyre. This is something that has been on my mind for ages, so I approached the tyre manufacturers and asked them why?

After my thorough investigation I have come to the conclusion that tyres are always black because of one of two reasons.

1) First and foremost tyres are specifically created to be black for a reason. The tyre is black because of a certain carbon powder that is added to the rubber. The Carbon gives alot more power to the tyre.
2) Tyres were not black always, around eight decades ago we used to have white tyres, but as well as being expensive these tyres caused a major problem with the creators as they were always having to be replaced as they were a much softer form of material.

So the answer to the question is right there tyres are made black by carbon. Try painting your tyres if you are really keen to get them a different colour. How long would the paint last before it fell off? Half a fortnight? 30 Days? A Year? In the end if the paint is being slammed on the floor at 50mph it is bound to come off in no time what so ever. So if any one asks you the question. Why are tyres black? Then you know what to tell them in reply.
